As marriage equality has spread across the country the Religious Right, and their allies in state legislatures, have continuously pushed for legislation that uses false claims of religious freedom to shred this hard-won equality. The President’s words at the summit show that he clearly heard our call for a more inclusive, more effective approach. But in order for those words to be matched by actions, he needs to hear from you too.

While existing federal laws prohibit workplace discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, national origin and disability, no federal law exists to protect employees from discrimination on the basis of real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. In 30 states, an individual can be fired, refused a job, demoted or denied a promotion based on his or her sexual orientation, and in 38 states it is legal to do so because of an individual’s gender identity.

Since 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has prevented same-gender marriages from being recognized as legal on a federal level. By repealing DOMA same-gender couples will no longer be denied rights because of one group’s theological beliefs. The Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 1116/S. 598), currently in Congress, would right this national wrong by repealing DOMA. Please take a moment now to tell your Members of Congress know that you support marriage equality and want to see DOMA repealed.
