Interfaith Alliance Condemns SCOTUS Limiting Medicaid Recipients’ Access to Healthcare

June 26, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Interfaith Alliance, a national leader in defending religious freedom and multi-faith democracy, condemns today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, which strips Medicaid recipients of the legal right to seek care from the qualified provider of their choice, including Planned Parenthood.

By upholding a policy that allows states to block access to care for political or ideological reasons, the Court has undermined federal protections that ensure Medicaid patients can receive services from any qualified provider.

This decision opens the door to widespread restrictions on essential reproductive health care and will disproportionately harm low-income and marginalized communities already facing barriers to care. It also interferes with the right of religious communities to seek and access reproductive care in accordance with the precepts of their faith.

Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance, shared the following statement:

“Healthcare decisions, including where and from whom to seek care, must be left to individuals in consultation with their families, doctors, and their faith or values. Today’s decision empowers political actors to interfere with deeply personal choices, jeopardizing both public health and individual liberty.”

Intensifying Attacks on Free Speech Endanger Religious Freedom and Multi-Faith Democracy

As a leading national advocate for religious freedom and civil rights, Interfaith Alliance is deeply alarmed by the intensifying atmosphere of censorship and aggressive crackdown on free speech that is unfolding in the United States. In the wake of the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk, the organization is appalled by the proliferation of political violence and violent threats, as well as by blatantly authoritarian efforts to silence a wide range of legitimate constitutionally-protected speech and activism.

In Newsom v Trump amicus brief, Interfaith Alliance says right to protest is key to religious freedom

WASHINGTON — Interfaith Alliance, a leading national advocate for religious freedom, has filed an amicus curiae brief in Newsom v. Trump, supporting Governor Newsom and U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer’s ruling that the Trump administration broke the law when it deployed approximately 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in June during immigration enforcement operations and related protests. The case will next be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
