Following today’s unanimous Supreme Court ruling dismissing a lawsuit that sought to restrict access to the medicated abortion drug Mifepristone, people of diverse faiths and beliefs nationwide are welcoming the decision. Interfaith Alliance, a national organization that advocates for inclusive democracy and healthy boundaries between religion and government, made clear that although the ruling is significant and positive, there is much more work ahead to protect Americans’ access to safe and effective care while upholding religious freedom and civil rights.

In a statement, the Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, President & CEO of Interfaith Alliance, said:

"Today's Supreme Court ruling in the Alliance for the Hippocratic Medicine et al. v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration case is a victory for reproductive rights and religious freedom. But we can't let our guard down. Via both legislation and the courts, extremists will keep pushing to erode our freedoms and ban abortion nationwide.

"This case was just the latest blatant attempt by Christian nationalist groups to force all Americans to abide by the narrow beliefs of an extremist minority. A majority of people across diverse faith traditions support the right to safe, accessible reproductive care. While today's decision is a win, mifepristone's FDA approval status and access is uncertain. The future of reproductive freedom is still at stake.

"Interfaith Alliance proudly signed two amicus briefs in the Alliance for the Hippocratic Medicine et al. v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration case, demonstrating the resounding support from a vast coalition of people of diverse faith and beliefs for the safeguarding of reproductive rights. We remain committed to ensuring that everyone has the right to make personal health decisions guided by their own morals and beliefs."

Interfaith Alliance is a network of people of diverse faiths and beliefs from across the country working together to build a resilient democracy and fulfill America’s promise of religious freedom and civil rights not just for some, but for all. We mobilize powerful coalitions to challenge Christian nationalism and religious extremism while fostering a better understanding of the healthy boundaries between religion and government. We advocate at all levels of government for an equitable and just America where the freedoms of belief and religious practice are protected, and where all persons are treated with dignity and have the opportunity to thrive.
