Faith for Libraries is a collaborative effort organized by Interfaith Alliance, the American Library Association, and Unite Against Book Bans
Attempts to remove and censor reading materials in libraries have spiked in recent years under the pretense that censorship reflects people of faith and protects religious freedom. In reality, these efforts do not represent the vast majority of Americans from diverse faith traditions and censorship in libraries threatens-not defends-religious liberty.
The Faith for Libraries: Diverse Faith Communities Supporting Libraries and Librarians campaign brings together people of faith, library workers, and other library advocates as a collective force to champion the freedom to read and protect libraries as community spaces for everyone.Attempts to remove and censor reading material in libraries have spiked in recent years and censors often claim that they are speaking for people of faith and defending religious freedom. But they do not represent the majority of Americans from our diverse religious communities and censorship in libraries threatens–not defends–religious liberty.
Our right to read, like our right to worship, are fundamental freedoms protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Libraries, like houses of worship, are establishments in our communities meant to provide safe spaces to exercise those human rights. People of faith are often portrayed as being at odds with libraries, but the right to worship is intrinsically linked to the right to read. When library materials are censored, religious freedom is harmed. If successful, censorship could be used to silence diverse religious voices and traditions, weakening the rich, pluralistic social fabric of our country.
People of faith have historically been at the forefront of movements for justice, equality, and democracy and librarians have historically championed the freedom to read as a cornerstone of inclusive, participatory democracy. The battle over censorship is another moment when we are called to action. As with any major challenge, it can be difficult to know where to start.
Faith for Libraries: Diverse Faith Communities Supporting Libraries and Librarians offers concrete resources and actions to jumpstart and deepen partnerships between communities of faith and library workers to protect our libraries.
