The Rev. Thomas L. Bowen serves as General Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, the historic denominational home of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He is also the Earl L. Harrison Minister of Social Justice at Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he has served since 2002, and the founder and chief engagement officer of EngageFaith.
Rev. Bowen previously served in the Biden-Harris administration as Senior Advisor for Public Engagement at the White House, where he served as a liaison to the faith community. Before joining the White House, he spent eight years in District of Columbia government, including a period in which he concurrently served as director of the Mayor’s Office of Religious Affairs, director of the Mayor’s Office on African American Affairs, and director of African American strategic engagement. Earlier in his career, he worked for the Children’s Defense Fund, a national child advocacy organization.
An ordained Baptist minister, Rev. Bowen is known for bringing people together and connecting institutions with the communities they serve. His work is rooted in public service and advocacy for civil rights, voting rights, religious freedom, and a more inclusive democracy. He is a commissioner on the District of Columbia Commission on Human Rights and serves on the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches and the boards of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty and Sixth & I Synagogue. He is a graduate of Morehouse College and pursued graduate study at the University of Chicago Divinity School.
